Estes Park, Colorado
YMCA of the Rockies
August 11~16, 2009

Airport Terminal in Atlanta before departing for Denver.

Boarding Pass. Fortunately the flight was on time and nobody griped about my oversized carry-on bag. It would have cost me $15 to check a single bag.

Relaxing after flight, dinner, and drive to the YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park

Paul in Deer Ridge Lodge room on first night (August 11)

An abundance of Soymilk at breakfast at the YMCA. There was plenty of healthy food throughout my trip.

Cozy Administration Building with gas log fireplace. Lots of people (including me) congregated in this room with laptop computers. The Wifi was very fast.

Several bands were guests at the hotel. Photo shot in the morning of August 12.

Carla's Room in the Halletts Building.

The rear of The Stanley Hotel, the location that inspired Steven King's book "The Shining." Mimi worked here, and this was my ticket
to free lodging in the Stanley's staff housing.

The hike up Mt. Chiquita was approximately 2.4 miles one way with an elevation gain of 2,429 feet.

Boots became easier to carry soon after summitting. I walked down most of the mountain barefoot.

Carla on the trip down Mt. Chiquita. Craig and Mimi went down an alternate trail and everybody met at the car.
This photo turned out well, but taking it made a great excuse to stop and rest my bare feet.

After the Mt. Chiquita hike we drove around and stopped at the Alpine Visitor Center on Trail Ridge Road.

Next day (Thursday, August 13). Solo hike on Cow Creek Trail to Bridal Veil Falls. This 3.2 mile hike (one way) was easy.

Small waterfall on Cow Creek Trail en route to Bridal Veil Falls.

My (free) sleeping quarters for 2 of my 4 nights in Estes Park were on the matresses piled up in the back of this room in the Stanley Hotel staff housing.

Next Day (Friday, August 14). Bear Lake from trail leading to Haiyaha Lake. This is National Forest Service Land.

This photo does not do justice to the beauty and tranquility of Haiyaha Lake. The lake is 2.2 miles from the trailhead. Since Bear Lake is adjacent to the trailhead, it
was packed with people, but there was not a single other person at Haiyaha Lake.

Sharon and Carla immediately before departing the YMCA on Saturday, August 15.
